On Friday, the leader of Turkey had a telephone conversation with the Prime Minister of the Netherlands, during which the Turkish leader conveyed that his country’s support for a potential NATO leader would be contingent on fulfilling specific criteria and needs of Turkey, as stated by the Turkish presidential office and reported by Reuters.
In his discussion with the Dutch Prime Minister, who is seen as a strong candidate for the NATO leadership position, the Turkish leader emphasized the importance of the future head of the military alliance promoting the interests of all member states in combating terrorism and respecting the peculiarities of allied states not part of the European Union, according to an official statement.
It’s noteworthy that the selection of the successor to the current NATO leader, whose term ends in October, comes at a critical time, requiring someone capable of maintaining the alliance’s unity and cautiously managing the relationship with Ukraine amidst the conflict with Russia, while avoiding an escalation that could involve NATO in a direct conflict.
Additionally, in March, the President of Romania announced his intention to run for the leadership of NATO, at a time when the Dutch Prime Minister was considered the favorite for the role. This followed after several major Western countries expressed their support for the Dutch Prime Minister, according to a Reuters report, which strengthened his position in the race for the NATO leadership role.
